Obituary

Please note: The Hardy has been reinvented as a smart bistro with darkwood chairs and tables and leather couches and armchairs. It offers stylish bar snacks--and a candle-lit restaurant on the first floor which draws heavily on the neighbouring fish deli in the market [operated by the same folk that run the Hardy and the Trafalgar Tavern, who have invested heavily in the property].

See The Last Hurrah--the closing party at the Adminral Hardy prior to its being taken over by new management].

The publishers of GMT2000 declared an interest here--the Admiral Hardy being their erstwhile branch office (across the road from our studio backing on to the Cutty Sark).

It had probably the most varied patronage of the many pubs in Greenwich. Rock musicians and museum curators, accountants and antique dealers, rugger-buggers and football fans, businessmen and teachers, nurses and workmen, pressmen and holiday makers all gathered there--from all parts of the British Isles and at any given time, from just about any other part of the world. It’s a magnet for residents from all parts of the Borough.

The Hardy is a large room, accessed by two entrances from College Approach and one from the market, with one central bar with bench and table seating. The walls are lined with maritime prints--from owner Robin Challis’s shop Relcy Antiques.

Three Guinness pumps reflect the popularity of the “black stuff” here. There’s usually a choice of guest ales and a fine pint of Burton--all well kept in the pub’s excellent cellar--and generous helpings of basic home-cooked food are offered at lunchtime.

On Sunday and Thursday evenings there’s live music--and a well-attended Quiz night on Monday evenings during the winter months.
